Boot Camp and the trackpad - my tip

I have just recently found out that the tapping feature on the trackpad is not supported via Boot Camp. Because I use the VX revolution all the time (even on the road) I haven't used the trackpad a lot up till now. However, this week I have been forced to use the trackpad of my Macbook while in Windows and had to realize that tapping just doesn't work.

After playing around with the settings in Windows and the trackpad I have come to the conclusion that tapping is not supported by the Boot Camp drivers yet. However, I have found out something interesting:
you can right-click by placing two fingers on your trackpad and clicking the trackpad button.

I found this very interesting and thought I share this little tip, in case some of my blog readers didn't know about this yet.

BetterZip Quicklook Plugin-a must have

Today, I'd like to present a truly useful plugin for Quicklook that I have found after surfing the web for Quicklook enhancement utilities. It is the BetterZip Quick Look Generator. What it does is simple: It enables the use of Quicklook with various archives (zip, rar, etc.). In my opinion this is very useful since you can take a look what's in an archive without extracting it or launching a third party software. What amazes me most is the speed of this plugin. It opens very quickly. In my opinion this plugin is a must have if you are a Quicklook fan and user.

Make calls with the iPod touch?

I have come across an interesting blog where some hackers try to get the iPod touch to be VoIP ready. Apparently, they are pretty close to getting the job done. Now this would be very interesting since it would be kind of like the iPhone without the contract.

More powerful QuickLook (Sites and Blogs)

QuickLook Plugins Blog

Today I'd like to introduce to you a site that I have come across by coincidence.
I am not quite sure how many of you use QuickLook in Leopard but for me QuickLook is one of the features that I like the most (besides Stacks and Spaces). However, there are some file types that can't be loaded in QuickLook by default. Well, no worries there is a site called QuickLook Plugins that has some plugins to enhance QuickLook.
It is a rather young blog so there aren't that many plugins posted yet but I think with time the list of plugins will grow. It is definitely worth a visit.

レビュー: aevoe.comのPalmGuard(マックブック用 ホワイト)

Official Homepage

English review
Deutscher Testbericht

Review: fabrixcase's Macbook case/bag

Official homepage

Deutscher Testbericht

Intro

fabrix is a Singaporean company that sells various handmade cases and bags for Macbooks, iPods, digital cameras and much more. Because of the Tucano Second Skin's and Raedan bag's popularity I have decided to review yet another case/bag for the Macbook. I think that the fabrixcase is a worthy addition to the bag/case/sleeve reviews of Days of our Macbooks.

The Material

The material used for the fabrixcase is of high quality. The outside is made out of denim (the same material that jeans are made of). I think that because of the tough material this case can take quite some abuse without ripping. The inside of the bag is padded with a polyester like material. It is not low quality at all, but for my personal taste the material could have been a little "softer". I guess it is personal preference though.

The Design

As for the design of the bag I can say that I really like it. Some people may dislike the fact that velcro is used to close the case but I actually don't mind that at all. One thing that has to be mentioned is that the red stripes part is not padded. The aspect that I like the most about this bag is the back pocket. You can easily fit a college block in there, pens, the power adapter or an iPod. Especially for students the fact that you can fit a notebook in there might be a nice feature. On top, there is a little compartment where you can store your Apple Remote - this is a really nice little feature in my opinion.

The fit and the protection

The bag is fitted perfectly. My Macbook fits in there just fine. Scratch protection is a given since the whole Macbook disappears in the bag. What really is remarkable about this case however, is the padding. If I had to compare it to the Tucano Second Skin, I'd say it has about twice the protection. It actually has a better padding than the incase sleeve in my opinion.

Final thoughts

The cases/bags by fabrix definitely are worth a consideration. You can choose between some design variations and the back pocket surely is a nice feature. I really love the little compartment for the Apple Remote (someone had a really good idea there).
Some little aspects need to be pointed out though. Personally, I think that the inside material could have been a little softer and the upper edge of the Macbook is not protected as well as the rest because the red stripes part is not padded. The price of 40 USD is not too high in my opinion considering the high quality materials used and the fact that these bags are handmade. Shipping is also very inexpensive (9 USD). You have to keep in mind though that shipping time is a little longer since the bags are shipped from Singapore. I had to wait about 3-4 weeks till mine arrived. If you can wait and want a bag that really is manufactured well, has a rock solid padding and some nice little features (back pocket, Apple Remote compartment), I would recommend this bag to you.

English review

Official Homepage PalmGuard

Eigentlich muss man nichts erwähnen.

Santa Rosa Macbooks: more USB power

According to Hardmac the Santa Rosa Macbooks feature more powerful USB ports. They provide 1,1 Ampere compared to the 0,5 Ampere of the previous models. Now, this is a cool thing, especially for people using a lot of high power USB devices (like external HDs).
One thing that I was wondering about though was, is the new Apple Aluminum keyboard more compatible? In the sense that I can connect my iPod to charge it via the port of the keyboard? If anyone knows I'd appreciate a comment on this because many Mac users were in fact very unhappy that the new keyboards were fully compatible with the new iMacs only.

Software for Switchers (as well as longtime Mac users) Part VI: Quicksilver

This little application was long overdue also to be presented in this blog series. Quicksilver is a very useful, versatile utility that is really hard to describe. It is primarily an application launcher...or let's say that most people probably use it as an app launcher. It can do so much more than just that though. For example with additional plugins installed Quicksilver becomes an iTunes controller, a clipboard manager, etc.
It truly is one of the most useful apps that I have come across.
Be warned though...to unleash the full potential of Quicksilver I recommend reading a couple of tutorials on how to use Quicksilver. If you don't you probably won't see why Mac users make all the fuss about Quicksilver.

Testbericht: fabrixcases Macbook Tasche

Official homepage

English review

Intro

Review: aevoe.com's PalmGuard for the Macbook (white)

Deutscher Testbericht

Official homepage: PalmGuard

Introduction

The palmrests of the Macbooks are known for their discoloration. While one might think that Apple would have fixed this by now you still can find many threads in Mac forums where Macbook owners complain about discoloration. This is where moshi's Palmguard comes in to play.

Material

The material used for the Palmguard is hard plastic. It is a sticker type of protection you have to apply to the palmrest area of the Macbook but what surprised me the most when opening the package and holding the Palmguard in my hands was the fact that the material is surprisingly hard. Don't get me wrong it is very thin and flexible but the material itself is very tough. If I had to summarize in one sentence: it feels like someone took the material of the original Macbook top case and formed an ultra thin protection layer.

Contents of the package

Obviously you get one piece to protect the top case of your Macbook (the bottom half of the top case). Included also is a small piece for your trackpad button that is made of the same material as the main piece. Finally, there is a transparent very thin sticker that you apply to the trackpad itself. A very neat extra that you'll find in the package is a plastic ruler (6 inches, black) which you are supposed to use to get the guards on properly.

The application

Applying the Palmguard is very easy. There is actually nothing to say about it. Just align it correctly and use the included ruler to press and it's done. A little tip: When you get the alignment perfectly around the trackpad the Palmguard should be in the correct position.

The Design, feel, and fit

I truly love the design. The Palmguard just looks awesome on my white Macbook. Since the material which is used is very similar to the original top case it blends in very well. I especially like the little logo in the right bottom corner - now that is elegant understatement of the finest. The feel is very nice also. Because of the material which is used, there is no "sticky feeling" like with other palmrest protectors. The fit of the Palmguard is very exact, too.
To summarize: I think if you are on the search for palmrest protection only this is the one that fits the best (color-wise and material wise) and feels the best when resting your palms on it.

Final thoughts

I recommend this product to all Macbook owners that want protection for the palmrest area and want to do it without attracting too much attention. From a distance you won't be able to notice the Palmguard because it doesn't reflect, because it matches the color of the top case very well and finally because there is no large company logo on it.
Is this the best palmrest protection I have tested so far? For my taste, yes, unless you want to customize the look of the top case (like the DeinDesign skins). If you are looking for solid protection that doesn't stand out, go for the Palmguard. At a price of 20$ I can truly recommend this product.

Alpha version of Things: Some screenshots

So I'm not so sure if some of you remember my blog entry about Things.
Things is another GTD application that has entered alpha stage and since I got my hands on it I wanted to share some screenshots.

Well, first of all...after playing around with it for a while, it sure is easy to use and very clean. My first impression is that Things is a tags-focused app. It tries to use tags and filters to organize rather than hierarchical structures. I personally like this approach since it is more dynamic than having a structure.

Since this is still the alpha version, there is still a lot of features that aren't integrated yet but the app looks promising.

Here is the official homepage of Things: Cultured Code Homepage

Wide is beautiful - Vienna and Apple Mail -

So you have a Mac with a widescreen...
and want to make the most out of it. Well, two of my most favorite apps that I use daily are Vienna and Apple Mail. In Vienna (most people probably already know) you can go to "View" -> "Layout" (in the menu bar) and change the layout to condensed to get out most of your widescreen.

In Apple Mail however, there is no built in option to change the layout so that it fits the widescreen format. Well, there is still a very nice little plugin called WideMail that you can download and once properly configured your Apple Mail will look like this.

I have to say wide is just more beautiful;)

Software for Switchers (as well as longtime Mac users) Part V: Adium

Homepage of Adium

Shame on me for not having done a blog entry for Adium yet.

What's Adium? It's the most known duck in the Mac world...no seriously, it is like Trillian or Pidgin for the Mac. It is a multi-protocol instant messenger that is highly customizable and certainly the best instant messenger, in my opinion. It should be one of the first apps that gets installed on a new switcher's Mac.
Only downside of Adium is the fact that it does not support AV chat - yet.
According to the developers' blog they are currently working on implementing this feature. I'd say with AV chat there won't be any competition for Adium.
