I haven't been able to surf the internet much lately but I found out that Gmail now even has IMAP support...now seriously...is there any good reason not to use Gmail? I think not...great spam filter, huge storage, free, POP and IMAP support. I will definitely try out Gmail in conjunction with Mail via IMAP once my Macbook is back.

I thought you need an invitation for a gmail.com account or do you use a googlemail.com acount?

you do not need an invitation to open a mail account with gmail.
Just surf to gmail.com and open an account with your desired username.

oh I think I misunderstood...
if you are a German resident you will get a googlemail.com account which is gmail (because of brand issues google was forced to name its mail service googlemail in Germany)
