So I have read a few blog entries about the online backup service mozy and that it got updated for Mac users also. Since it seems to be a very good service and it gets hyped in various places on the net I decided to give it a spin. I have signed up for a free account that gives you a storage of 2GB and downloaded the software also. I am still a bit skeptical to upload private things to an online backup service so I just selected some folders with random files in it to test out the software and the speed of mozy's online backup service. First of all the software that you need will be running in the menubar and it is very easy to select the stuff that you want mozy to backup (there are quite a lot of predefined backup rules in mozy which makes backing up a lot easier). Then there is another section where you can select custom folders that you want to be backupped also.
I have already selected what I wanted to be backupped this weekend but had trouble connecting to the servers. But today I was able to connect to the mozy servers and am currently trying my first backup. Currently, I am backing up about 250 MB of random data and according to the software it will take a bit over an hour till the process will be finished.
I guess I will post about the backup once it is finished.
Up till now I am very impressed about the simplicity that mozy offers.

Microsoft Messenger : mac 7: finally with AV feature
Messenger : mac 7 is finally out!
And it has the long awaited AV feature. If you are a MSN user you should definitely give this a try. I haven't tried it myself yet but will tomorrow for sure.

If you are a boot camp user I think this software is a must have. In combination with the ntfs3G drivers it allows you to write ntfs formatted partitions also.

Updated Macbooks and Macbook Pros
Well, like many of the rumor sites had predicted the Macbook lineup got an upgrade today.
While there have been some rumors around, the main upgrades just involved minor hardware improvements. The MBP got a multi touch trackpad, however not the cool one like the MBA. More details on the Apple site.

Firmware Update for Keyboard Macbook and Macbook Pro
Finally an update has been released that is supposed to fix the keyboard problems with all the Macbooks. The keyboard of the Macbooks are known to just ignore the first keystroke which has been a bug for a while now and wasn't fixed with the 10.5.2 update. However, there has been an update at last - so if you haven't downloaded the firmware update yet, now is a good time to press the Apple logo -> Software Update:)

Inquisitor getting bashed!
Inquisitor a very popular plugin for Safari by developer David Watanabe is getting bashed for manipulating the search results with hidden affiliate links (you can read more here on Tuaw). Now, I really did like Inquisitor since it was "freeware" and added a very nice user interface to the google search box that is integrated in Safari. However, can you call a software like Inquisitor that makes money with hidden tactics a real freeware? It really would have been no problem if David Watanabe had mentioned the affiliate links somewhere in the license or if you are able to just turn it off but the current way is just plain wrong. Let's see what will happen with Inquisitor in the future but for now that plugin is uninstalled on my Macbook and if I will ever trust David Watanabe is another issue.

Apple's new sub notebook...real or fake?
Today I have found a supposedly leaked photograph of the much rumored new sub notebook that Apple is about to release at Macworld (Link to story). I myself am not so sure if this is real but if it is and the large trackpad has some multi touch feature à la iPhone or iPod touch it'd be kinda cool. What do you think? Real or fake? Comments are very welcome.

Alpha version of Things: Some screenshots
So I'm not so sure if some of you remember my blog entry about Things.
Things is another GTD application that has entered alpha stage and since I got my hands on it I wanted to share some screenshots.
Well, first of all...after playing around with it for a while, it sure is easy to use and very clean. My first impression is that Things is a tags-focused app. It tries to use tags and filters to organize rather than hierarchical structures. I personally like this approach since it is more dynamic than having a structure.
Since this is still the alpha version, there is still a lot of features that aren't integrated yet but the app looks promising.

GMail chat feature finally available via Safari
One of the cooler features of Gmail (one of the most complete free email providers) is the Gmail chat. Imagine my surprise when I saw that it is finally available and useable via Safari this morning. I'm not sure if it works with Safari 2 also but I guess it does...if anybody can confirm this I'd be very happy to hear about it in the comments.

Macbook (Pro) and Mac mini owners at risk of losing data?
According to this article at Computerworld some Macbook (Pro) and Mac mini owners are at risk of losing data due to a hardware flaw. Only these Macs with certain Seagate HDs are at risk.
For more details please check out the article and cross check your HD in System Profiler. Fortunately, I am not affected.

Macbooks updated
The portable Macs (Macbook and Macbook Pro) have been updated. It was a rather small and silent upgrade (similar to the Mac mini upgrade earlier). The Macbook now features the Santa Rosa processor and the graphics chip (X3100). The pro line got a processor bump.
Btw. same old casing...no aluminum Macbooks for now...maybe next year.
