AppFresh is Leopard ready

I'm probably very late with this blog entry but AppFresh is Leopard ready.
AppFresh is a little utility that keeps your applications up to date. It is linked with the site iusethis.com so having an account at that page is useful.
An alternative to this little app is a dashboard widget called App Update which works fine for me.

Santa Rosa Macbooks: more USB power

According to Hardmac the Santa Rosa Macbooks feature more powerful USB ports. They provide 1,1 Ampere compared to the 0,5 Ampere of the previous models. Now, this is a cool thing, especially for people using a lot of high power USB devices (like external HDs).
One thing that I was wondering about though was, is the new Apple Aluminum keyboard more compatible? In the sense that I can connect my iPod to charge it via the port of the keyboard? If anyone knows I'd appreciate a comment on this because many Mac users were in fact very unhappy that the new keyboards were fully compatible with the new iMacs only.

Software for Switchers (as well as longtime Mac users) Part VI: Quicksilver

This little application was long overdue also to be presented in this blog series. Quicksilver is a very useful, versatile utility that is really hard to describe. It is primarily an application launcher...or let's say that most people probably use it as an app launcher. It can do so much more than just that though. For example with additional plugins installed Quicksilver becomes an iTunes controller, a clipboard manager, etc.
It truly is one of the most useful apps that I have come across.
Be warned though...to unleash the full potential of Quicksilver I recommend reading a couple of tutorials on how to use Quicksilver. If you don't you probably won't see why Mac users make all the fuss about Quicksilver.

Testbericht: fabrixcases Macbook Tasche

Intro

fabrix ist eine in Singapur ansässige Firma, die handverarbeitete Macbook Taschen (iPod u.a.) verkauft. Aufgrund der Beliebtheit meines Tucano Second Skin Testberichtes soll nun noch eine Tasche getestet werden (nach dem raedan Test). Da beide Taschen doch etw. unterschiedliche Gruppen ansprechen, denke ich wird dieser Test eine würdige Ergänzung sein. Nun zum Testbericht...


Das Material

Das Material, das verwendet wird, ist bei dieser Tasche qualitativ hochwertig. Die Aussenseite ist aus Denim (der gleiche Stoff aus dem Jeans hergestellt werden). Man kann wohl davon ausgehen, dass diese Tasche einiges aushält. Die Innenseite ist mit Polyester ausgepolstert. Obwohl das Material der Innenseite auf keinen Fall minderwertige Qualität aufweist, denke ich, dass eine etw. sorgfältigere Wahl besser gewesen wäre. Für meinen Geschmack fühlt sich der Kunststoff etw. "hart" an (es raschelt und hat etw. zu sehr vom Plastik Feel). Ansonsten habe ich bzgl. der verwendeten Materialen nichts auszusetzen.


Design

Das Design der Tasche finde ich persönlich sehr schön. Es ähnelt der Raedan Tasche, die ich getestet habe mit dem Unterschied, dass anstelle eines Gummibandes hier ein Klettverschluss benutzt wird. Manchen mag das wohl nicht zusagen, aber mir gefällt es eigentlich sehr gut. Zu bemerken ist, dass der rot gestreifte Teil aber nicht gepolstert ist. Was mir an dieser Tasche jedoch besonders gut gefällt ist das Fach, das auf der Rückseite angebracht ist. Sie ist gross genug, um einen College Block zu verstauen, was Studenten erfreuen mag. Man kann natürlich auch andere Kleinigkeiten dort verstauen (wie iPod, Netzteil, etc.). Ein sehr nettes Detail dieses Fachs ist, das kleine Täschen, was für die Apple Remote gedacht ist. Hier hat jemand sich wirklich Gedanken gemacht.



Fit und Schutz

Der Fit der Tasche ist wie angegossen. Das Macbook verschwindet drin und alles passt. Nun zum Schutz, den diese Tasche bietet. Obligatorischer Schutz vor Kratzern ist natürlich gegeben. Was aber bemerkenswert ist, ist die Polsterung. Diese ist wirklich sehr gut. Wenn ich Sie mit der Tucano Polsterung vergleichen würde, würde ich sagen, dass die Polsterung ca. 1,5 bis 2 mal so gut ist.


Mein Fazit

Die Taschen von fabrix sind sicherlich eine Überlegung wert. Man kann zwischen einigen Designvarianten wählen und die Verarbeitung ist sehr gut. Was besonders hervorzuheben ist, ist das Fach auf der Rückseite und die kleine Tasche für die Remote (dies hat es mir besonders angetan:)
Einige kleine Kritikpunkte bleiben allerdings: So finde ich, dass die Innenseite ruhig etwas weicher hätte sein können und die Oberkante des Macbooks ist nicht wirklich gut gepolstert. Der restliche Teil ist allerdings hervorragend gepolstert. Der Preis von knapp 40 USD pro Tasche ist sehr günstig (dank des starken Euros) und der Versand mit 9 USD auch sehr human. Zu beachten sind jedoch die langen Lieferzeiten, da die Firma in Singapur ansässig ist. Bei mir hat es knapp 4 Wochen gedauert, bis die Tasche ankam. Wer jedoch warten kann und Geduld hat dem kann ich auch diese Tasche empfehlen, solange er mit den kleinen Kritikpunkten leben kann.

Review: aevoe.com's PalmGuard for the Macbook (white)

Introduction

The palmrests of the Macbooks are known for their discoloration. While one might think that Apple would have fixed this by now you still can find many threads in Mac forums where Macbook owners complain about discoloration. This is where moshi's Palmguard comes in to play.


Material

The material used for the Palmguard is hard plastic. It is a sticker type of protection you have to apply to the palmrest area of the Macbook but what surprised me the most when opening the package and holding the Palmguard in my hands was the fact that the material is surprisingly hard. Don't get me wrong it is very thin and flexible but the material itself is very tough. If I had to summarize in one sentence: it feels like someone took the material of the original Macbook top case and formed an ultra thin protection layer.


Contents of the package

Obviously you get one piece to protect the top case of your Macbook (the bottom half of the top case). Included also is a small piece for your trackpad button that is made of the same material as the main piece. Finally, there is a transparent very thin sticker that you apply to the trackpad itself. A very neat extra that you'll find in the package is a plastic ruler (6 inches, black) which you are supposed to use to get the guards on properly.

The application

Applying the Palmguard is very easy. There is actually nothing to say about it. Just align it correctly and use the included ruler to press and it's done. A little tip: When you get the alignment perfectly around the trackpad the Palmguard should be in the correct position.


The Design, feel, and fit

I truly love the design. The Palmguard just looks awesome on my white Macbook. Since the material which is used is very similar to the original top case it blends in very well. I especially like the little logo in the right bottom corner - now that is elegant understatement of the finest. The feel is very nice also. Because of the material which is used, there is no "sticky feeling" like with other palmrest protectors. The fit of the Palmguard is very exact, too.
To summarize: I think if you are on the search for palmrest protection only this is the one that fits the best (color-wise and material wise) and feels the best when resting your palms on it.


Final thoughts

I recommend this product to all Macbook owners that want protection for the palmrest area and want to do it without attracting too much attention. From a distance you won't be able to notice the Palmguard because it doesn't reflect, because it matches the color of the top case very well and finally because there is no large company logo on it.
Is this the best palmrest protection I have tested so far? For my taste, yes, unless you want to customize the look of the top case (like the DeinDesign skins). If you are looking for solid protection that doesn't stand out, go for the Palmguard. At a price of 20$ I can truly recommend this product.
