Macbook finally back from repair...upcoming reviews

Well, my Macbook is finally back from repair after being in a repair center for almost three weeks. The defect seems to be fixed and I am quite happy about that.

Just wanted to post about the upcoming reviews that you might be interested in.
First, there will be a software review (it's been a while) of the application Remote Buddy.
Then I will try to post a review about a sleeve/case for the Macbook. I am about to get a product sample from raedan.de soon and am looking forward to testing it. The decision to include a case again for reviewing was made rather simple because the Tucano SecondSkin review (one of the first) is one of the most read reviews on my blog. Apparently, there is a general interest in sleeve reviews, so I hope you are excited about it also.

Here are the first benchmark results that I have found on the net which compares Tiger versus Leopard OS X. Interestingly, in this comparison Leopard seems to be a little bit slower than Tiger but read for yourself.

Something white is missing in my life with my MB in repair...

Since my "something white" is missing in my life ever since I sent my Macbook in for repair I thought it'd be time to find something else...by the way the Macbook still isn't here...hopefully next week.
Anyways, on my search for something white and cool I decided to buy a pair of new shoes: Nike's airforce ones (totally white) :)
Now, these shoes just rock...gotta be careful though not to get them too dirty.

I haven't been able to surf the internet much lately but I found out that Gmail now even has IMAP support...now seriously...is there any good reason not to use Gmail? I think not...great spam filter, huge storage, free, POP and IMAP support. I will definitely try out Gmail in conjunction with Mail via IMAP once my Macbook is back.

Koolsink

Official homepage Koolsink

For the English review click here.
Der deutsche Testbericht, hier klicken.

One week without my Macbook...disappointment...

It's been a week now since I gave my Macbook to a German Apple certified service provider (Gravis). I have to say I miss my Macbook lately...it's not only Vienna and my RSS feeds but it's more the simplicity of the whole system that I miss...I was forced to use PCs lately and boy am I glad I switched.
Another thing I was surprised about is the support hotline of Apple. They sure are helpful and very kind...I have to say that investing in a Protection Plan was the right thing to do.
However, there is one thing that I really dislike...the after care infrastructure in Germany is ridiculous. You can't send your Mac in for repair directly-what you have to do is give it to an Apple service provider; in my case Gravis was the only one near by. Well, after giving my Macbook to a Gravis store clerk (who really was unmotivated and kind of rude) with all the data someone would need (password, serial, invoice, APP certificate, contact data, description about the defect) the Macbook was sent to a central repair center. Please note the Macbook was left at the store on Monday (right after the store opened)...after waiting till last Friday I finally decided to check back with Gravis how the repair process was going and they haven't even started yet (at least they managed to send the Macbook to the repair center)! No wonder there has been no news about the repair status.
Up till now the whole switching experience has been great...BUT after care in Germany is a joke...I just don't get why you can't send in your Mac directly to Apple; especially when seeing how customer unfriendly their biggest service provider is.
I guess there is nothing I can do but wait...I still have hope that the Macbook might be in my hands by next Friday but I wouldn't bet on it.

Two days without my Macbook...

It's been two days ago, I had to give my Macbook to an Apple Certified Service Provider for a repair...surprisingly I am doing ok actually. I'm forced to use really old filthy dirty PCs my university has standing around in the library but well...they do have enough performance so that I can check my mail.
The only thing that I miss is Vienna and my RSS feeds...although I have imported my feeds into google reader I must admit that Vienna is a lot more comfortable and faster. We'll see what else I will start to miss when time goes on...I was hoping I would get my Macbook back by Friday but this seems like it's not gonna happen...I guess I will have to wait till next week...

Testbericht: Koolsink Notebook Ständer

Official homepage Koolsink
For the English review please click here.

The worst thing about Macs (Link)

I came across an article today that...well...in some points it just was what I was thinking too...while some other points were quite exaggerating-but read for yourself. I guess this is nothing new to old Mac users but to me it sure has some valid points and was very interesting to read. Don't get me wrong I don't think the article is right about everything but some examples the author mentions just are good ones.

Review: Koolsink Notebook Stand

First Impressions

Official home of the Koolsink
Für den deutschen Testbericht bitte hier klicken.

The Koolsink notebook stand is a simple sleek looking stand. It basically is a 2mm thick aluminum plate designed to be a fanless notebook stand to improve the ergonomics and the cooling of notebooks. I have had the opportunity to test out the Koolsink stand specifically made for the Macbook in silver thanks to the kind people at Higoto GmbH. As said above, the first impression of the stand was sleek, simple, stylish.

Design

The design of the Koolsink is pretty cool in my opinion. The Koolsink is offered in different sizes and in two color variations: black aluminum and silver aluminum. I think the silver aluminum goes better with the white Macbook and the black with the blackbook. The Koolsink lifts the Macbook for about 4 cm in the back so the keyboard is a little tilted when you use the Kooksink with the Macbook and the display is comfortably raised. At the back the Koolsink's homepage is printed (lasered?). At the bottom there are four little plastic feet so that the desk nor the Koolsink get scratched while in use.

Ergonomics

The Koolsink improves the ergonomics pretty well by tilting the keyboard and raising the display (4 cm approximately 2 inches). I liked how it improved my touch typing because I personally like tilted keyboards more than flat ones. I actually even think that the Koolsink can be a bit more higher (maybe 1 or 2 cm) for my taste but I think that this height probably suits more people.

Cooling

Now, since the main selling point of the Koolsink are the cooling abilities I have thought up a personal cooling test to test out the fanless cooling of the Koolsink. I have decided to proceed this way:
  • after the Macbook has been shut down for at least 5 hrs I booted it up and have started a scan with ClamXAV (a virus scanner for OS X that uses a lot of performance and heats up the Macbook pretty good).
  • I let ClamXAV run for 30 minutes and measured the temperature by using iStat (a system utility widget).
  • I did this once without the Koolsink (Macbook on a wooden desk) and once with the Koolsink. Below are a few screenshots of the widget.

The source for the cooling effect is one the aluminum plate and two an effect called the Venturi effect according to the manufacturer.

Final thoughts

I think the Koolsink is a fine piece of a notebook stand. What I really like about it are the following aspects:

  • it really does cool down the notebook
  • it is portable, light and small
  • it is fanless, thus silent and longer battery life
  • better ergonomics
  • stylish design

The only downside is the price. In Europe you will have to pay 50 Eur plus shipping which is quite expensive; this might sound a little too much for some people. Unfortunately, I had to return the product and purchasing is just not possible at the moment in the EU at that price-at least for poor students like myself I guess. However, if you are looking for a notebook stand that cools, is semi-portable and doesn't need power-then look no further-you should go for the Koolsink.

Well, today Apple's market capitalization is 140.4 billion US-$...Dell is at a market capitalization of 62.27 billion US-$.

For the English Review please click here.
Für den deutschen Testbericht hier klicken.
Official homepage of the mouseglider

Software for Switchers (as well as longtime Mac users) Part III: Skim

After having posted an image viewer and a media player in Part I and Part II of this little series I have decided that Part III will be a pdf reader. I personally love Skim. It is open source and it is way faster than the Adobe counterpart. I didn't like Adobe's Reader under XP either so finding an alternative in OS X was a must. What is so special about Skim?

  • Well, first: it is way faster than Adobe in my opinion.
  • Second: it has some really neat features that is really useful for students, academics, etc.
  • And finally: it is open source.
To show you what you can do in Skim I have taken a screenshot in which I have used most of the features that I love about Skim. Take a look!

Testbericht: Mouseglider-eine einzigartige Mousepad Alternative

For the English Review please click here.
Official homepage of the mouseglider

The mouseglider: a mousepad alternative

Intro
Für den deutschen Testbericht bitte hier entlang.
Official home of the mouseglider

The mouseglider is a unique accessory product for your mouse. It is hard to describe what it is...it's a mousepad in a way, a protector for your skin in another, makes your mouse move faster on hard surfaces...it really is something unique that you have to have in front of you.

What does the mouseglider do?

Well, it can be used as a replacement for your mousepad but it can also be used in conjunction with your mousepad. The primary goal of mouseglider in my opinion is to improve the usability of your mouse and most importantly the comfort while using your mouse.
Now how does the mouseglider improve the usability of a mouse you might ask. It actually does this very nicely by reducing the friction that is caused while moving your mouse on a hard surface (like your desk). The bottom layer of the mouseglider is made out of a hard plastic layer with holes in it and it really makes your mouse move a lot faster than without the mouseglider. The first thing I had do when I started using mouseglider was to reduce the cursor speed and the cursor acceleration settings in Steermouse. The mouse literally glides on your desk with this little accessory.
Point two: improved comfort. This is actually what I like most about the mouseglider. It makes it a lot more comfortable to use your mouse. The top layer of the glider is a soft foam layer that feels very nice and soft. By having the mouseglider between your hand and the surface you use your mouse on you have better gliding as mentioned above but more importantly your fingers don't run over the desk surface which can be annoying and uncomfortable at times. This is actually what I really like...you always have the same texture at your fingers and palm regardless of how much you move your mouse. You now may say, well, doesn't a mousepad do the same? Well, it does but the mousepad does limit you in the way that mousepads usually aren't that big and you eventually run out of space and have to reposition your hand. This obviously won't happen with the mouseglider since your whole desk is “like a mousepad”.

My personal thoughts...

Here are some of my thoughts about the mouseglider. I personally do like the mouseglider. It's a unique product and in my opinion it does its job very well; which is making the mouse glide better on your desk and improving the comfort while using the mouse. However, I must mention that at this time the mouseglider isn't suited for all mice. If you own a notebook mouse the mouseglider is not really what you want to get since with notebook mice you don't really use your hand/palm as a whole to move the mouse but rather your fingers. In this case the mousepad is the first choice in my opinion. But if you are a desktop mouse owner this product sure is worth a try. I have used my old MS intelli optical mouse to test the mouseglider the past week and after a getting-used-to period I have to say you don't want to give the mouseglider away. It is important to know that there is a need for a learning period before you can really appreciate the mouseglider...at first it sure is kind of difficult to use your mouse with it but after a few days it gets second nature. There is an extra forearm glider also that can be attached to the mouseglider but I personally like it better without it since I do not move my forearm that much while using the mouse. If you are a gamer or somebody who moves the whole arm a lot the forearm protector might be really useful. What I really liked was that you can stick the mouseglider to your mouse with the included sticky rubber. I did this because I am a person who occasionally lifts his mouse and it would have been bothersome if you had to move the mouseglider every time you lifted your mouse. This way you do not have to worry about that.

Final thoughts

I think that if you do not like conventional mousepads you really should try out the mouseglider. It really makes it easier to work with your mouse after a short learning period. I recommend this product only to desktop mice owners like mentioned above though. And if you are somebody who uses the mouse only by moving the fingers I doubt that mouseglider is the way to go. To all other mouse users however, I do recommend this unique mouse accessory. If you visit mouseglider's homepage you will see that the inventor of mouseglider offers several sizes for different mice. I recommend contacting the mouseglider team before purchase if you are insecure about which size to get. On a ten point scale I would rate the mouseglider an 8.5 points product. There is a 1 point deduction because in my personal opinion the mouseglider is not 100% suited for notebook mice.
The half-point reduction is because for some people the mouseglider may be too unique and hard to get used to. In my case the mouseglider was just the product I have been looking for when I am using a desktop mouse.
